Based on a damaged BitTorrent file of Jean Rollin's The Night of the Hunted (1980), The Torrent translates cross-cultural file error into a new narrative configuration. The action moves between a foreboding beach villa in which a poet attempts an epic rewrite of "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," and a sinister hospital where the Torrent reigns over scantily clad incapacitated women.

Again, from that little bookstore in Hudson, the staff is in a tizzy over The Torrent, with fights breaking out in the Children's section, presided over by Kathy A. (a staunch supporter, as opposed to the Kathy A. in accounting, who is organizing a burning.) We've gotten a supportive comment from John A., somewhat of a poet himself, well-regarded in that corner of the world, but who unfortunately is still only a cashier.

A kind of ‘stereo’ effect enhances the experience. We are following him on one level and almost but not entirely missing him on another, a place where secrets remain secret—the ‘Republic of Dreams’ where ‘The Torrent’ presides.

You say this story is about sex and violence and therefore isn’t worth considering because it uses content much less lots of content and all the middle-range bookstores and reviewers (which is all of them) say Milutis is a disgusting violent sadist. Well, you know nothing of The Torrent except how to eat your own hearts with envy, you don’t eat cunt, writing isn’t a viable phenomenon anymore.

It is in their courage in bearing the intolerable relationship to the Supreme Being that these characters recognize and choose each other. Their ethics is manifestly “beyond sex” (hors-sexe), so much so that I would like to give it the accent that Maupassant provides by enunciating somewhere in his work the strange term ‘Horla,’ or, in Milutis’ case ‘The Torrent.’

If we are to let the algorithms be arbiters of literature, before it can even see the light of day, what is to be next? Now I know there is a difference between a promotional blog and an actual book, and it is only the former that has been thusly impeded . . . but wait, what in the last forty years of the history of everything has taught me to perceive this fine distinction between promotion and actual thing promoted? Well nothing. So I take it back. The book itself has been blotted from its rightful place in the shadow of the sun's falling on the obelisk which memorializes what we call "our contemporary moment."
